Planning for the 2018-2019 Barnabas Journey GapYear program at Sonlight, we reflect on our first GapYear. We learned a lot, and had much to celebrate. One student was in the program, and her take is that it was very successful. One of her goals was vocational discernment, and she reports that in addition to other things learned, she is leaving the program with some clear direction of her next steps in life.
Some highlights for our student:
- Being involved in the hospitality of camp ministry, especially serving people through the foodservice of Sonlight
- Getting to see a variety of youth ministry programs, as we hosted their retreats. It is inspiring to see great youth ministry!
- Living in a community where people live their faith and love one another has strengthened my relationship with God
- Working through planned exercises of vocational discernment, and having opportunity in Pagosa Springs to explore vocations, I have a clear idea of the path ahead
- The Mexico mission trip!

- The best highlight is arriving at the outcome we’d hoped for, our student is coming away with some clear vocational discernment
- Preparing for the Bible study part of the program, and the theological reflection time together
- How the off-camp experiences helped clarify the classroom part of our work
