Travels

Across Texas! In January, Winston and Mary travelled over 3,600 miles to visit long time Sonlight friends, former staff, guests and campers. From Amarillo, through Dallas, Richardson, Palestine, Victoria, Shiner, Austin, Stamford (and more) we loved the conversations with so many people. Some we hadn’t seen in 28 years, others we see regularly.

Best Discovery
  • The historic “Painted Churches” in south Texas are amazing
Most Delightful
  • Picking up friendships with people we haven’t seen in years, and the joy of shared memories
  • Visiting places where our staff and guests live and work
What We Learned
  • The power of camp. Whether it’s a backpack trip, a summer camp, ski trip or retreat the impact of time away, time in the mountains, time unconnected absolutely changes lives
Most Unexpected
  • An ice storm in Austin
Best Sleeping
  • Mary Pryor’s lovely home, decorated in French Provincial style
  • In Charlie’s guest room – it’s a loft area with the ceiling and walls covered in tin from the Sonlight lodge roof. Charlie hauled off the tin when we replaced the roof in 2005
  • Camped on the beach at Padre Island
Best Meal (that’s a hard one)
  • Homemade Gumbo by Kelly Teal, a shrimp boil thanks to Carolyn and Ron Adrian, soup at the Liles, kolaches …. just to name a few!
