Hallmarks

This camp is not your typical resident camp, but instead is more similar to that of our backpack trips.  Campers will spend their time with Sonlight backpack guides  (also trained as their counselors), learning the ins-and-outs of backpacking, wilderness stewardship, orienteering, geocaching, and more!  Their time will be spent between the Sonlight Backpack Base and actually out camping/backpacking on some of the best, most beautiful trails in the area!

Daily Schedule

Monday, July 22nd — Arrival: 11:00 am at the Backpack Building

Lunch, as well as all other at-camp meals, will be provided for the campers at the Backpack Building.  After lunch, the day will kick off with fun team building and orienteering activities.  Dinner will be served, followed with a campfire and campout at the Backpack Building.
Tuesday
After breakfast the campers will begin learning the ins-and-outs of backpacking preparation and wilderness stewardship.  We will pack a sack lunch and prepare to hit the trail for two nights, and three days of fun in the wilderness.
These campers will enjoy a backpacking/camping experience on Pagosa Spring’s beautiful Four Mile Trail. The difficulty ranking of this trail is easy to moderate.  The campers will hike 3 to 4 miles into a beautiful campsite, where they will spend Tuesday, and Wednesday nights before hiking out on Thursday afternoon.

Wednesday

Wednesday will be completely in this wilderness setting, meals and all.  The campers will have a chance to totally unplug from the busyness of day-to-day life.  They will have time to reflect, rest, and explore in the beauty that lies all around them.  There will also be a group day hike.

Thursday
After breakfast at their campsite, the campers will wrap up their wilderness experience and come off the trail by early afternoon.  The remainder of the day will be spent at the backpack building, continuing to learn the ins-and-outs of post-trip details.  After dinner and games, the campers will camp out at the backpack building again this evening.

Friday
After breakfast and a morning of debriefing their wilderness experience, the campers will head into town for a fun geocaching adventure!  They will return to camp that evening to enjoy a backpack-style banquet and cookout at the backpack building.  The campers will enjoy one more evening of fun together before sleeping in the backpack building and preparing for departure the following morning.

Saturday, July 27th — Departure: 9:00 am at the Backpack Building
After breakfast at the backpack building, the campers will pack up and prepare to head home.
FAQ's
How do you hire and train your staff?

We hand-pick college students through our selective hiring process. Pre-summer, our staff go through an extensive 10-day orientation and training. Our summer staff are fully trained in areas such as child development, homesickness, bullying, behavior management and safety. You entrust us with your child and we do not take that lightly. We want your child to have the best summer camp experience possible.

Still have more questions? Call us! Emrys and Sara Tyler, Directors: 970.264.4379 or Becca Berger, Backpack Coordinator: 970.264.4379.
