Why is your left thumb smashed?

In 1984, we were building the lodge. We were nailing down the corrugated metal roofing when a new summer staff member arrived. Doug was from Minnesota. After greeting Doug and getting him moved in to his tent for housing, we all went back up on the roof and continued to nail down the metal roofing. Doug looked at Janet and Angus who had black and blue smashed left thumbs. Doug asked “why are your thumbs smashed? Can’t you hit a nail?” On Doug’s first swing of the hammer to pound his nail into the roof, he missed and smashed his left thumb. Yes, it went black and blue. Now, he was part of the club. No more thumb questions.
