Two cabins built in three days

Every Memorial Day weekend, Sonlight Camp would have an old fashion “barnraising”. We would erect a log cabin. In the early 1990’s we had so many people that wanted to come and build a cabin we decided to build two cabins in the same weekend. The Eastin-Westin and the Hi Up Regency. We had the foundations both finished with the floors installed and ready for the logs by Friday before the weekend. All the logs, trusses and building material were at camp and ready to be installed.

Saturday morning, we divided our 60 (or more) people into two cabin groups. Then, each group was divided into 4 smaller groups, one for each wall…south wall, east wall, north wall and west wall. It evolved into a race between the two cabin groups as to who would complete their cabin first. Down goes the first log and off we go. By Saturday night, all the log walls were up on both cabins. By Sunday night, all the roof trusses were installed, blocked and the roof decking was on. By Monday noon, the roof metal was on, all the windows were installed and the doors were swinging on their hinges and they even closed.

Two and a half days, 60 people and two cabins. Mary and her kitchen team fed us all like kings. What a fun weekend and what a great addition to the camp.
