Stepping down off the snow to get to the roof of the bath house

Back in the days of heavy snow winters, the area between the lodge and Winchester Cathedral would get buried in snow. Deep snow. Snow would avalanche off both roofs. The little building in between was always buried. The snow would come up to the bottom of the dining room windows. Feet of snow!

Usually after three feet of snow on the bath house roof, we would shovel the roof free of snow so it would no collapse. This was not an easy task. As we climbed up the pile of snow between the two buildings, we would step down from the pile onto three feet of snow on the roof. Yes, the pile of snow between the buildings was higher than the roof.

Then, the problem was where to put the roof snow. Since the roof was below the pile of snow you could not simply rake the snow off the roof. We had to shovel it over the north edge of the roof. That meant carrying a lot of snow. Needless to say, this was an exhausting day of fun at Sonlight Camp.
