The plastic winter walkway

circa 1986

In the early days of Sonlight, the walkway from the parking lot to the lodge was just dirt. During the winter months, it was shoveled snow frozen hard. Nice path. But, as Spring arrived the frozen snow became mud. Bad mud. Sonlight had no money to build a wooden walkway. But, we did have lots of blue plastic bread racks. You know, the type the bread delivery comes on. Large 24” X 36” plastic flat things. So, we made a walkway from the parking lot to the lodge out of plastic. Simply laid them in the mud sometimes 2-3 layers of plastic thick. Innovative. But, tacky as well.

We now really appreciate the 6 foot wide asphalt path from the parking lot to the lodge.

(The current asphalt walkway was paid for and layed by the work group from Covenant Presbyterian Church, Wichita Kansas, in memory of one of their members Donna Strong)
