“Whatever your task, put yourselves into it, as done for the Lord and not for people.” ~ Colossians 3:23

Shoveling snow.
Drafting job descriptions.

Pulling hair out trying to figure out electrical wiring on an old tractor.

Camp means doing a lot of little things. Sometimes they’re tasks a monkey could do. Sometimes they’re impossible even for someone with an advanced degree to figure out. But they take time and energy, and they fill the days. Sometimes the list seems endless . . . and circular.

But at the end of every circle is a group of guests–ski groups, church retreats, and of course several hundred exuberant youth in the summertime. We hope that when they arrive they won’t have to worry about doing the dishes. They won’t have to wonder whether the tractor works. They can trust that the climbing wall is ready for their adventure. They will be able to focus on something different than the mundane details of the day-to-day.

They will be able to take a deep breath of cool mountain air, get lost in the glimmer of the evening snow, and listen to a teaching about the love of God in Jesus Christ.

That’s why Sonlight is here: to take care of the little stuff so that folks can come and listen to God.

So we wash the dishes, put chains on the tractor, and fix that door handle (again), knowing that we’re doing it for the Lord. By extension, we do it for every guest, beloved by the Lord, to whom the Spirit will speak while they’re here.

I give thanks for every little task that helps people to know God’s boundless love.
