27 Sonlight staff come together at the end of May to spend 10 days in staff training, preparing for the summer. We spend intentional time every day, exploring the foundations of camp. At Sonlight, we believe in presenting the Gospel through work and play. We prepare for the summer, exploring the dynamics of Sonlight campers, preparing our testimonies, learning and doing the activities, and strengthening our community.

Research supports, and we firmly believe that the outcomes of camp: — self-identity, self-worth, self-esteem, leadership, and self-respect — build personal competencies. These personal competencies are reflected in the four “C’s” of the camp community: compassion, contribution, commitment, and character! For years, campers’ parents have reported that when their children return home from camp they are more caring, understand the importance of giving, are more equipped to stand up for what they know is right, and are willing to be more responsible. These are the qualities that will help build a successful nation and a civil society.

Once the kids get here, all that training makes sense. Our week has been great. We are working hard and playing hard. Skyler’s teachings this week have been great, and we’re prayerful for open hearts and open minds as he speaks. In our world today Sonlight is a unique place, and we do not take any day with kids for granted.
